Topher
Straus/Reel
Dreams LLC
Reel Dreams is the creation of Topher Straus, a
filmmaker friend who lives and works in LA. Topher and I were in the same
art core at Syracuse University, and I credit him for making me less of a
tight ass. He's got a sense of humor from left field and is always good for
an adventure. Topher's first feature-length documentary "Extra: In the
Background of a Dream," was selected by several film festivals in 2002.
I helped out on the press packet for Krush,
though in the end I think he only kept my tag line suggestion. Look for big things from Reel Dreams in the years to come. David
Penna
Dave used to teach through Brookline Adult Ed, and it was in his class that I
ended a two year drought of non-painting. David has been a great friend, inspiration, and resource. He
now works out of Chicago. Chris
Edmunds
Some people tell me they can't draw a stick figure. Me, I have always
struggled with sculpture, which makes me admire Chris's
work all the more. When I moved to the Bay Area, Chris let me have a
corner of his sculpture studio on the agreement that I bring beer from
time-to-time. If you find yourself in the same position, Chris is a Miller
High Life fan. Chris moved to DC with his girlfriend Maggie
in 2004, but whenever we hear Ween or go to an A's game, we think of
Chris. David
Gremard Romero
David runs a figure drawing group out of his Mission apartment. Someday,
when he's huge in New York, I'll be able to say I knew him when ... Richard
Freeman
My grad school classmate Jim introduced me to Richard. Working out of his Castro studio,
Richard paints his ass off; several canvases a week. If you don't check up
on him at least once every couple months, you'll find that he's moved onto a
completely new subject matter, series, or method of applying paint. At the
recent San Francisco open studios, this was my
favorite painting of his. Ben
Phillippo
Ben is my younger cousin, but at 5'11" hardly my little cousin. He is a
film student at Emerson College in Boston. At 15 he made a video for
Radiohead's "No Surprises" during his summer vacation that
introduced the concepts of "shock and awe" to family gatherings.
It's far from his best work, but it showed an early enthusiasm for the form
and gutsiness for subject matter. Lyman
Eyre Gallery
Located in Provincetown, Lyman-Eyer Gallery, Inc. not only
offers a breath of fresh air from the litany of tourist-crap-art galleries,
it also represents David's work. The gallery has featured several of my
paintings in their on-line auctions. |
